Your nails are more than just hard shells of keratin, they are an accessory to your overall look and personality that you never take off.

Bold colours, dark and moody colours or a creative splash of nail art, what you choose to put on your nails is a reflection of your personality. But, great looking nails start with good nail care, which is why we turned to Creative Nail Technician of the Year and Scratch Nail & Beauty Salon owner, Chantal Welvaert to give us her top nail care tips...

Nail care with Chantal

As a salon owner/nail technician, I see so many different nail types and conditions. It's your nail technicians job to assess the nail and decide what's right for your nails, whether it be a regular manicure, gels or nail extensions.

My top tips for strong and healthy nails are:

  • Use hand moisturiser regularly
  • Care for your cuticles by using a cuticle oil daily
  • Eat Well
  • Don't use your nails as tools
  • Don't peel or pick gel or acrylic nails off - this will damage your nails, always make time for a soak off
  • Apply a strengthener over natural nails
  • Prioritise nail health over length

At Scratch we take care of nails by ensuring we use the best products on the market, and we do not use electric files - all our filing is done by hand. I would say our most popular nail treatment in the salon is Gel over natural nails - we specialise in Biogel and Calgel. All our nail techs are trained in the products we use, and we go on regular refresher courses to keep up-to-date with the latest skills and techniques.

Our favourite product for nail care is CND Solar Oil, which gives you a great splash of moisture - nothing beats this nourishing cuticle oil!

Look after your nails, they are jewels not tools!
