How to Start a Skincare Routine

Share

Skincare is in a world of its own, there is constantly overwhelming information being fed to us, but where do we begin? Here Jenna Unwin – founder of Million Dollar Facial - gives us her basic guide to creating a skincare routine, one that will give you a glowing complexion in no time!

Workout your skin type

Are you oily, dry or a combination of both? Once you start using the correct products made specifically for your skin, you will notice an instant difference. Skincare products are made specifically for certain skin types. It is important to understand your skin as it steers you in the correct direction when purchasing products.

How do you figure out your skin type?  To help you get started, here are some tips to determine your skin type - without the professional assessment.

Oily skin

If you have large pores all over your face, your skin gets shiny throughout the day, and visible oil appears when you blot on a tissue, it is considered an oily skin type.

Dry skin type

If your skin almost feels tight, looks rough, has small pores and is tight and flaky (especially during the colder months), then you can be considered a dry skin type. However, if you still experience breakouts - then you do not truly have dry skin. Breakouts originate from oil, so if you are still getting breakouts, then your skin cannot be completely dry, and your products may be the problem.

Combination

If your pores are larger primarily in the T-zone (across your forehead, nose, and chin) and visible oil appears only in those areas throughout the day, then you can be considered a combination skin type.

Cleanse, tone, moisturise…

A skincare routine does not have to be complicated. Stick to a good cleanser for removing makeup and eye makeup. Then apply Toner, serum, moisturiser, and eye cream for a super quick, simple, and effective routine. For your skincare routine to be effective you should apply the products in the correct order, here is a simple and easy breakdown:

The secret to glowing skin is a cleanser. Look into a prescribed cleaner to use morning and night. A prescribed cleanser ensures you are using the correct cleanser and most importantly, the texture is most suitable for your skin type.

Toner has many skin benefits. Toner removes any last traces of dirt, grime, and impurities stuck in your pores after you wash your face. When added to your daily skincare routine and used regularly, it can have a major positive impact on the appearance and tightness of your pores.

Do not forget to moisturise. Moisturising is one of the best things for your skin. Proper hydration ensures skin is healthy, glowing and plump.

Did you know moisturising has a technique to it? Dot on and rub in moisturiser in a gentle and circular motion. This daily massage will reduce puffiness, boost circulation, and energise skin. The upward movement also helps to counter wrinkles and downward drag.

How to store your skincare products:

Do not let your products go to waste because of improper storage. Instead, keep your products stored in a cool and dark location. Try to avoid direct sunlight and steam to get the most out of your skincare formulas. Organise your skincare, keep all the products you use in one place, making your skincare routine easier and more accessible.

Why not treat yourself to a facial?

Whether it is an at home mask or a luxury treatment at a spa, a facial every now and then can give your skin a second glow and give you time to truly relax. Million Dollar Facial recommends going somewhere which is suitable for all skin types. Treat yourself to a signature treatment, to assure you are getting the right treatment for you. Not sure how often to go for a facial? Once will give you great results, but regular visits will change your skin forever. Find your local Million Dollar Facial salon here.

When it comes to skincare - patience is key. A skincare routine will not always work right away. Give your skin a chance to get used to the new products. However, if a new skincare product gives you any irritation or allergic reaction, make sure to discontinue right away.

Stay consistent with your new skincare routine. Keep to your skincare routine day and night and you will start to see and maintain real results. Skincare is all about trusting the process.
