We're all worried about the COVID-19 outbreak, yet we need to keep our salons open and businesses moving.
Here you'll find useful information regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. Of course, all of this comes with the disclaimer that as the situation changes the advice to clients, staff and salons will change too. It's really important to let your clients know that you are open for business as normal, and so we've produced a poster/web document that you could use to keep them up to date with your salon policy and approach to COVID-19.
Having spoken to insurers there is currently no 'industry position' on whether loss of earnings would be covered by a salon policy. However, this is likely to change as the outbreak continues, so we'll update you as and when this happens.

In case COVID-19 spreads more widely, employers should consider some simple steps to help protect the health and safety of their staff:
It's good practice for employers to:
- Keep everyone updated on actions being taken to reduce risks of exposure in the workplace
- Make sure everyone's contact numbers and emergency contact details are up to date
- Make sure managers know how to spot symptoms of coronavirus and are clear on any relevant processes, for example sickness reporting and sick pay, and procedures in case someone in the workplace develops the virus
- Make sure there are clean places to wash hands with hot water and soap, and encourage everyone to wash their hands regularly
- Provide hand sanitiser and tissues for staff, and encourage them to use them
- Consider if protective face masks might help for people working in particularly vulnerable situations
- Consider if any travel planned to affected areas is essential
Employers must not single anyone out. For example, they must not treat an employee differently because of their race or ethnicity. Further details on this can be found here on the acas website or here on the hse website.
The dedicated HMRC helpline for businesses and self-employed individuals who have difficulty with paying their tax due to COVID-19 promised at Budget 2020 is now in operation. The number of the helpline is 0800 0159 559.
The helpline can assist with:
- Setting up a time to pay arrangement
- Suspending debt collection proceedings, and
- Cancelling late payment penalties and (unusually) interest
2,000 experienced HMRC staff are available on the helpline, but it is not completely clear whether this is additional resource or a deployment.
